The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of God’s boundless mercy. Not only does it free us from our sins, but it also challenges us to have the same kind of compassion and forgiveness for those who sin against us. In this sacrament, our Baptismal identity is renewed, our souls are healed, and we are given the grace needed to fight temptation and live virtuous lives.
Jesus entrusted the ministry of reconciliation to the Church. The priest acts in the person of Christ and is a conduit of His mercy and forgiveness, but it is Jesus Himself who forgives us. Regularly seeking out confession helps us become aware of our weaknesses and patterns of sins and gives us the opportunity and grace needed to make changes to live better Christian lives. Making a good confession at least once a year is a Precept of the Catholic Church, but making a habit of confessing your sins more regularly is always recommended.
Children typically make their first confession in 2 nd grade before receiving First Holy Communion. Details for preparation found here.
